The essential guide for medical and mental health professionals who need to understand what to Know, Ask, Do (KAD) when firearm-related issues arise in their practices. In Firearms and Clinical Practice, Gianni Pirelli and Sarah DeMarco provide medical and mental health professionals with a practical guide on the intersection between mental health and firearms. Utilizing a best-practices model that encourages empirically-supported practice and decision-making, the authors present case examples, vignettes, and useful tips for medical and mental health professionals to navigate gun-related issues that may arise in practice. They further outline and review formal frameworks and models for clinicians to incorporate when firearm-related issues arise in therapeutic contexts, especially when the assessment of suicide and violence risk is necessary. In addition, they assess newly developed forensic mental health assessment (FMHA) models and applications for evaluating civilians seeking initial firearms permits, gun rights restoration, and reinstatement of firearms subsequent to revocation and forfeiture matters. Firearms and Clinical Practice is a must-have resource for a wide range of medical and mental health practitioners, designed to help readers apply firearm-related information, concepts grounded in the empirical literature, and best practices in the clinical and forensic treatment and evaluation arenas.

The growing concern over the number of accidental firearm shootings, especially those involving children, prompted passage of the initial handgun safety law which went into effect in 1994. The stated intent of the California Legislature in enacting the current FSC law is for persons who obtain firearms to have a basic familiarity with those firearms, including, but not limited to, the safe handling and storage of those firearms. The statutory authority for this program is contained in Penal Code sections 26840 and 31610 through 31700. These statutes mandate DOJ to develop, implement and maintain the FSC Program. Pursuant to Penal Code section 26840, a firearms dealer cannot deliver a firearm unless the person receiving the firearm presents a valid FSC, which is obtained by passing a written test on firearm safety. Prior to taking delivery of a firearm from a licensed firearms dealer, the purchaser/recipient must also successfully perform a safe handling demonstration with that firearm..

During that time, he oversaw the firing of about 1.5 million handgun rounds each year, with all types of handguns. He trained about 2,500 students each year, including private citizens, security personnel and police officers, military police, intelligence units and Special Forces detachments. He has been involved in armed confrontations both as a police officer and as a private citizen, and has seen firsthand how decent people, with proper training, can fight back and overcome criminal attacks. The dangerous legal loopholes facing an innocent person after a self-defense shooting are described, with solutions proposed. Calling 911 after surviving a criminal assault negates your right to remain silent, your right to have an attorney present during questioning, and compromises your 5th Amendment guarantee against self incrimination, all into a police voice recorder while you¿re still traumatized and shaking from adrenaline. Proposed solutions include changes to law and criminal procedure, suggested behavior on the phone at the scene, and the model used by police after an officer-involved shooting, along with the controversial ¿Adnarim¿ statement.
