This edited book presents scientific results of the 14th International Conference on Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence Research, Management and Applications (SERA 2016) held on June 8-10, 2016 at Towson University, USA. The aim of this conference was to bring together researchers and scientists, businessmen and entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, computer users, and students to discuss the numerous fields of computer science and to share their experiences and exchange new ideas and information in a meaningful way. Research results about all aspects (theory, applications and tools) of computer and information science, and to discuss the practical challenges encountered along the way and the solutions adopted to solve them. The conference organizers selected the best papers from those papers accepted for presentation at the conference. The papers were chosen based on review scores submitted by members of the program committee, and underwent further rigorous rounds of review. This publication captures 13 of the conference’s most promising papers, and we impatiently await the important contributions that we know these authors will bring to the field of computer and information science.

Earth observation systems, by use of space science and technology advances, present a large-scale opportunity for applying remote sensing methods with geographical information system (GIS) developments. Integrating these two methods makes it possible to achieve high-accuracy satellite data processing. This book considers aspects of GIS technology applications with space science technology and innovation approaches. It examines the potential of Earth observation satellite systems as well as existing challenges and problems in the field. Chapters cover topics such as RGB-D sensors for autonomous pothole detection, machine learning in GIS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) modeling, and others.

Past research has comprehensively assessed the capabilities of satellite sensors operating at microwave frequencies, both active (SAR, scatterometers) and passive (radiometers), for the remote sensing of Earth’s surface. Besides brightness temperature and backscattering coefficient, microwave indices, defined as a combination of data collected at different frequencies and polarizations, revealed a good sensitivity to hydrological cycle parameters such as surface soil moisture, vegetation water content, and snow depth and its water equivalent. The differences between microwave backscattering and emission at more frequencies and polarizations have been well established in relation to these parameters, enabling operational retrieval algorithms based on microwave indices to be developed. This Special Issue aims at providing an overview of microwave signal capabilities in estimating the main land parameters of the hydrological cycle, e.g., soil moisture, vegetation water content, and snow water equivalent, on both local and global scales, with a particular focus on the applications of microwave indices.

Hyperspectral imagery has received considerable attention in the last decade as it provides rich spectral information and allows the analysis of objects that are unidentifiable by traditional imaging techniques. It has a wide range of applications, including remote sensing, industry sorting, food analysis, biomedical imaging, etc. However, in contrast to RGB images from which information can be intuitively extracted, hyperspectral data is only useful with proper processing and analysis. This book covers theoretical advances of hyperspectral image processing and applications of hyperspectral processing, including unmixing, classification, super-resolution, and quality estimation with classical and deep learning methods.

Above ground biomass has been listed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as one of the five most prominent, visible, and dynamic terrestrial carbon pools. The increased awareness of the impacts of climate change has seen a burgeoning need to consistently assess carbon stocks to combat carbon sequestration. An accurate estimation of carbon stocks and an understanding of the carbon sources and sinks can aid the improvement and accuracy of carbon flux models, an important pre-requisite of climate change impact projections. Based on 15 research topics, this book demonstrates the role of remote sensing in quantifying above ground biomass (forest, grass, woodlands) across varying spatial and temporal scales. The innovative application areas of the book include algorithm development and implementation, accuracy assessment, scaling issues (local–regional–global biomass mapping), and the integration of microwaves (i.e. LiDAR), along with optical sensors, forest biomass mapping, rangeland productivity and abundance (grass biomass, density, cover), bush encroachment biomass, and seasonal and long-term biomass monitoring.
