Combines the theory and practical - with simulation tools for the understanding and design of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communication networks. UWB is a revolutionary technology - recently receiving FCC approval. The UWB standard has several advantages including high transmission rates and the ability to carry signals while accounting for solid matter interference. Provides a theoretical analysis of the fundamentals of UWB radio communications supported by practical examples developed using computer simulations using MATLAB. UWB devices can be used for a variety of communications applications involving the transmission of very high data rates over short distances without suffering the effects of multi-path interference. UWB communication devices could be used to wirelessly distribute services such as phone, cable, and computer networking throughout a building or home. These devices could also be utilized by police, fire, and rescue personnel to provide covert, secure communications devices. The book presents the theoretical analysis of fundamental principles of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radio communications supported by practical examples developed using computer simulation. The simulation codes are provided in the form of user-customizable MATLAB) functions which are included in the book. The examples are inserted within the theoretical treatise in order to help and guide the reader in the understanding of analytical principles. The book covers issues related to both UWB signal transmission and UWB network organization. In particular, the topics covered by the book are: principles of UWB radio transmission and modulation (PPM, PAM and DS-UWB for Impulse Radio, OFDM for the multi-band approach), UWB channel modeling, receiver structures, Multi User Interference modeling, Localization, Network organization: advanced Medium Access Control and routing design strategies.

ULTRA WIDEBAND WIRELESS COMMUNICATION AN INTERNATIONAL PANEL OF EXPERTS PROVIDE MAJOR RESEARCH ISSUES AND A SELF-CONTAINED, RAPID INTRODUCTION TO THE THEORY AND APPLICATION OF UWB This book delivers end-to-end coverage of recent advances in both the theory and practical design of ultra wideband (UWB) communication networks. Contributions offer a worldwide perspective on new and emerging applications, including WPAN, sensor and ad hoc networks, wireless telemetry, and telemedicine. The book explores issues related to the physical layer, medium access layer, and networking layer. Following an introductory chapter, the book explores three core areas: Analysis of physical layer and technology issues System design elements, including channel modeling, coexistence, and interference mitigation and control Review of MAC and network layer issues, up to the application Case studies present examples such as network and transceiver design, assisting the reader in understanding the application of theory to real-world tasks. Ultra Wideband Wireless Communication enables technical professionals, graduate students, engineers, scientists, and academic and professional researchers in mobile and wireless communications to become conversant with the latest theory and applications by offering a survey of all important topics in the field. It also serves as an advanced mathematical treatise; however, the book is organized to allow non-technical readers to bypass the mathematical treatments and still gain an excellent understanding of both theory and practice.

This book offers means to handle interference as a central problem of operating wireless networks. It investigates centralized and decentralized methods to avoid and handle interference as well as approaches that resolve interference constructively. The latter type of approach tries to solve the joint detection and estimation problem of several data streams that share a common medium. In fact, an exciting insight into the operation of networks is that it may be beneficial, in terms of an overall throughput, to actively create and manage interference. Thus, when handled properly, "mixing" of data in networks becomes a useful tool of operation rather than the nuisance as which it has been treated traditionally. With the development of mobile, robust, ubiquitous, reliable and instantaneous communication being a driving and enabling factor of an information centric economy, the understanding, mitigation and exploitation of interference in networks must be seen as a centrally important task.

Breaking down complex technology into easy-to-understand concepts, this hands-on, system-level resource offers expert guidance in designing, optimizing, and managing a CDMA2000 wireless network. The book focuses on the development of practical knowledge that can be readily applied in the field, and also provides the theoretical background needed to effectively engineer a 3G network. Offering a deeper, richer treatment of critical topics than other books in this area, this unique reference concentrates on "how" and "why" the technology works in addition to providing descriptions of technology. You learn the key requirements of a 3G network and the relevant CDMA2000 features that satisfy these requirements. The book thoroughly explains the protocol layer framework and provides an in-depth discussion of power control and handoff functionalities. Additionally, it delivers an extensive treatment of system performance and design, addressing the important tradeoff between system coverage and capacity. A chapter on network architecture clearly explains how the CDMA2000 interface works and interacts with other elements in the network as a whole. Moreover, the book includes a detailed presentation of 1xEV-DO, explaining the differences between 1xEV-DO and CDMA2000, the ways both technologies operate in tandem, and how 1xEV-DO delivers high-rate packet data services.
