The 1810 census of the Illinois Territory does not exist in its entirety, but what has survived is given here in full. It lists 1,310 heads of families, and, by age groups, the number of free white males and females in each household as well as the number of other free inhabitants and slaves owned. The total represented is over 7,000 persons. The 1818 census, which is arranged by counties, makes up the bulk of this work. It lists over 4,000 heads of families and, for each household, shows the number of free white males over twenty-one, all other white inhabitants, free persons of color, and servants or slaves. This represents an estimated 20,000 persons. In addition, there are notations indicating which heads of households can be found in the federal and state censuses of Illinois for 1820.

The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Also included at the end of the book are the "Land and Tax List of King George County [VA], 1782;" "Personal Tax List of Fayette County, 1788;" "Personal Tax List No. 2 of Fayette County, 1787;" "Land Tax List of Prince William County [VA], 1784;" and the "Land Tax List of Charles City County, 1787." In This four volume set the author traces his Cottrell, Lashbrook, Brashear, and Campbell Family Lineage from Europe to the present day. Details on descendants of each generation is carried down through at least four descendant generations when known. Volume I and II cover the author's Father's beginnings (Cottrell and Lashbrook Lines). Volume III and IV cover the author's Mother's beginnings (Brashear and Campbell Lines). Sources are extensively documented. Timeline and ancestor charts are also included as well an "all name" index for each volume that provides page number references for each individual found in the respective volume. This Volume (Volume I) traces the author's Cottrell ancestry to William Cottrell who was born around 1615 in Stockport, England. William's son Thomas Cottrell, the author's seventh great-grandfather, who was also born in Stockport in 1635 was the first Cottrell in the author's lineage to immigrate to the New World and settle in New Kent County, Virginia.
