Excerpt from The Protestant Reformation and Its Influence, 1517-1917 The General Assembly of 1916, in session in Atlantic City, took the following action providing for the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which began with the posting of the Ninety-five Theses on the church door in Wittenberg by Martin Luther, October 31, 1517: "Whereas, The four hundredth anniversary of the Protestant Reformation occurs in 1917; and "Whereas, The Churches constituting the Council of the Reformed Churches holding the Presbyterian System represent historically one great branch of the Christian Church of the Reformation. Therefore, "Resolved, That the Council recommends to the several supreme judicatories the holding of suitable anniversary services for the purpose of emphasizing the great principles of the Reformation of the sixteenth century." - Minutes, 1916, page 309.
