From Gods mouth to the hearts of His people - this is the function of the Bible and is the reason it is called The Word of God. The Bible applied to the heart by the Holy Spirit is the chief means by which men are built up and established in the faith, after their conversion. It is able to cleanse them, sanctify them, to instruct them in righteousness, and to furnish them thoroughly for all good works (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) J.C. Ryle. After many years of anger against God, the Lord wonderfully restored the author to Himself and laid the burden of this ministry on his heart. Every week for the past fourteen years TFTWs (Thoughts From The Word) have been sent via the internet to Gods people throughout the world. Many similar thoughts may be found at www.onhisshoulders.com. The Bible can show you the way which leads to heaven. It can teach you everything you need to know, point out everything you need to believe, and explain everything you need to do. It can show you what you are - a sinner. It can show you what God is - perfectly holy. It can show you the great river of pardon, peace, and grace - Jesus Christ J.C. Ryle, 1816-1900, Bishop of Liverpool, whose picture is on the front cover. The thoughts contained in this volume are published with the sincere prayer that God will use them to refresh and encourage the souls of His people. Jesus gave answers to the temptations of Satan beginning with the declaration: "It is written." The Word of God is a storehouse of answers to combat the woes of this life. It is also a treasure chest of promises and hopes for the saints of God. It has a wealth of remedies for those who have no hope and for those trodden down with the terminal disease of sin. The Lord Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (Jn. 14:6) Man desperately searches the world over in quest of youth, longer life, and happiness of life. Yet, right before his eyes is the very treasure map that unveils the well of living water springing up unto everlasting life and the fountain of eternal grace flowing from Immanuel's veins. Within its pages the Holy Comforter has written wondrous guides through the straight and narrow way that begins at the foot of the old rugged cross. He leads the seeker securely in hand over the lofty heights of pure truth; and when the weary traveler is faint with distressing thirst, the Spirit and Bride say, "Come drink of the water of life freely, and you shall find rest for your soul and life more abundantly." These single page lessons are set forth only as brief simple studies of various topics of the Scriptures. They are not designed as theological discourses, or the settling of doctrinal issues. These are mere glimpses through the windows of the Word of God. They are thought provokers, docks for launching out into the deep, and stimuli for discussion of the truths of the Holy Scriptures. They are purposely designed for church bulletins, devotions, and study starters.

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was one of the major poets of the English Romantic period. This is the fifth volume of a six-volume edition of The Poems of Shelley, which aims to present all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between late summer 1821 and late January 1822. They include Hellas, a lyrical drama written in support of the Greek War of Independence, composed in September–November 1821 and published in February–March 1822, his unfinished tragedy Charles the First which he had been planning for several years, as well as important shorter poems such as ‘The Indian Girl’s Song’, ‘Autumn: a Dirge’ and his ‘Epitaph’ for John Keats. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. Now completed, this is the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

This book is written to reawaken awareness of both the beauty of the psalms and their ability to speak with relevance to our contemporary culture--a generation in danger of losing the psalmist’s voice. It is written for those who may have felt marginalized by church or society, whether from loss, tragedy, illness, or misuse of power. May this generation hear the voice of the psalmist pointing them to a God who desires honest expression, who comes close to listen to their cries, and points them to a deeper understanding of who he is and how he loves. May the words of the psalmist lead them out of isolation and into authentic community. The author’s approach to the psalms begins with recognition of the intertwining of imagery with the literary structure of the poetry found in the psalms. The imagery in the psalms comes from an earthy connection of the psalmist with the land of scripture. Understanding the imagery allows the reader to “see” the psalms and receive the message. It deepens the relevance of the psalms to speak into the myriad contexts in our present day multi-cultural world. Recognition of the religious and social dynamics of ancient Israelite life--such as kingship, Zion as a place of God’s presence, and the covenant relationship of a people with their God--provide further clues to understanding the message of the psalms. Along with the rich imagery present in the psalms, this book explores the literary structure of the poetry in the psalms. Recognition of key characteristics of Hebrew poetry allows the words to “sing.” In every psalm a vivid echo of ancient voices resounds, building century upon century of expression, reaching into the present. If one reads carefully, the melodies and message can be heard. The music of the psalms breathe with life and relevance. Psalms are filled with movement to hope and praise. Yet, they address the reality that life at times hurts. The psalmist gives honest voice to pain and affirms God’s presence in the darkest moments of life. This book explores the importance of lament both individually and in community as a vehicle to healing and a deeper understanding of God’s care. The book closes with an examination of five select psalms that are representative of different types of psalms found in the psalter. They were chosen because of personal relevance. Through imagery, structure, and voice the psalms convey movement from honest expression to hope. Hope leads to thanksgiving. Praise resounds because of who God is and how he cares.
